PREVENTIVE DENTAL CARE VISITS
While many of our patients initially come to the Bethesda Dental Implant Center for our expertise in periodontics and implant dentistry, many choose to stay with us for our comprehensive oral health services. We believe that a beautiful smile is based on health. Our preventive dental care program includes professional cleanings and oral health check-ups at intervals tailored to your individual dental needs.
A routine oral health visit with one of our dentists includes:
- Comprehensive oral exam
- Appropriate x-rays or 3-D CBCT imaging are done as necessary
- Oral health and cancer screenings
- Periodontal exam
- Basic TMJ evaluation
- Consultation with the dentist
The American Dental Association recommends that children and adults visit the dentist at least every six months for professional tooth cleaning. Patients who have a history of gum disease or other periodontal problems may need more frequent cleanings (every 3 to 4 months) to effectively prevent and manage gum disease.
ADVANCED DENTAL TECHNOLOGY
We utilize the latest technology in our Bethesda dental office including the i-CAT cone beam imaging system which takes incredible three-dimensional scans of the oral cavity and surrounding areas. This allows our dental care team to get a more comprehensive picture of the oral structures, such as teeth, bone, and jaw joints.
The scans are completed in just seconds and the technology allows for more diagnostic analysis of the structures of the mouth and jaw. We utilize this imaging when necessary for preventive care, TMJ treatment, dental implant planning, bone grafting, and other procedures.
DO YOU HAVE A HEALTHY DENTAL HYGIENE ROUTINE?
A healthy oral hygiene routine depends largely on two things:
- Daily brushing and flossing
- Regular preventive care visits for a thorough cleaning, exam, and updated x-rays when necessary
Patients who make these a healthcare priority typically experience better long-term dental health. Studies have shown that poor oral health can increase the impact of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and pre-term low birth weight babies.
Our dentists recommend that patients establish a good at-home routine and visit the office twice a year for preventive care or 3-4 times a year for periodontal maintenance. During these visits, he can look for the early signs of dental problems that can lead to more complex issues if untreated or caught after damage to the teeth and/or gums have occurred.
We have incorporated some of the latest dental technologies into our Bethesda office, including i-CAT cone beam digital imaging. This technology provides 3-D images of the entire oral cavity and can be used for a variety of treatments when a more in-depth picture of the oral structures is necessary.
During preventive care visits, patients are also screened for signs of oral cancer and periodontal disease, both of which can be considered “silent diseases” because patients can be asymptomatic until the late stages.
Dental hygiene should be considered an important part of your overall healthcare. Keeping a healthy and well-functioning smile plays a key role in our daily quality of life: presenting ourselves to the world, being able to speak normally, and eating a varied diet support our overall psychological and physical long-term health.
