Giving Your Teeth the Best Care at Home

Having your teeth professionally cleaned can do wonders for your teeth. Unfortunately, daily professional cleanings aren’t feasible. Thankfully, there are plenty of things you can do to keep your smile looking its best. Here are a few good tips to build a great home dental care routine.

Brush Twice a Day

You’ve probably heard your dentist say this again and again, but it really is the best thing you can do for your teeth. For most patients, dentists recommend brushing twice a day – once in the morning and once in the evening. If you can, it is even better to brush your teeth after every meal. Make sure to brush for two minutes on average to make sure and clean every tooth. Overwhelmed by toothbrush options? Choose a soft-bristled toothbrush. Soft bristles are enough to clean your teeth without damaging your enamel or gums. Follow up brushing by flossing  at least once a day.

Choose Fluoride

Choosing the right dental products can be intimidating. The most important thing to look for in your toothpaste or mouthwash is fluoride. Fluoride is a salt that has been shown to prevent tooth decay. Fluoride is so important that it is even added to public water systems, but it is always good to buy dental hygiene products containing at least 1000 parts per million of fluoride.

Chew Gum Between Meals

Sometimes brushing your teeth after every meal isn’t possible. For these instances, chewing sugar-free gum can be a good way to clean your teeth. It isn’t any substitute for regular brushing, of course, but chewing gum can help pull the food particles that cause decay off of your tooth surfaces. It can even reach places that brushes might miss. Gum can also stimulate saliva production to wash harmful sugars out of your mouth.

Eat the Right Foods

Leafy greens are full of essential vitamins and minerals like folic acid, which can help prevent gum disease. Milk and yogurt are full of calcium for strong bones. You should avoid sugars, and brush your teeth after eating sugary foods. One key exception are apples – they are very sweet, but the crunchy texture actually scrapes food particles off of the teeth, and chewing stimulates saliva production.

Schedule Dental Checkups

Even with the best care, your teeth can always benefit from a dental checkup. A trained hygienist can clean your teeth better that you can at home. More importantly, we can perform a checkup. Routine checkups let us monitor the condition of your teeth so we can head off any problems and treat them as soon as possible.
