Temporomandibular Joint Disorders, also known as TMD, are characterized by pain in the  neck, face, and mouth. TMD affects muscles and joints in orofacial areas, resulting in orofacial pain. The disorders are fairly common, with over 3 million cases of TMD each year in the United States.

Symptoms of TMD

Causes of TMD are less certain. However, there are possible reasons why Temporomandibular Joint Disorders manifest. TMD may be caused by these conditions:

  • Damaged joints
  • Damaged cartilage
  • Misaligned disks
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Poor posture
  • Excessive gum chewing
  • Trauma to the jaw or teeth

Risk Factors

If left untreated, Temporomandibular Joint Disorders may be cause for even more problems, such as:

  • Arthritis
  • Bruxism, or teeth grinding
  • Jaw Injuries
  • Connective Tissue Diseases

TMJ Disorder Treatment

However, TMD is treatable and reversible. Dr. Roy Eskow and Dr. Adam Eskow are experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders. Before treatment, patients are evaluated for TMD.

First, iCat cone beam imaging is used to take scans of the head and neck area. From these scans, Dr. Roy Eskow or Dr. Adam Eskow can determine structural problems in the area. The comprehensive assessment of the scan also determines where a patient’s teeth rest in their mouth.

Treatment may vary depending on the diagnosis, and there are multiple options for patients, such as oral appliance therapy, dental splints, and occlusal equilibration. Oral appliance therapy utilizes mouth guards that properly align the jaw and stabilize the tongue. Dental splints are inserted between upper and lower teeth and stop teeth clenching and grinding. Occlusal equilibration reduces the wear and tear of teeth and can also be worn by patients overnight.
